Russell Gillespie
Born in North Carolina
1922

Russell Gillespie was born in a log cabin similar to the ones he makes. He spent much of his early life in the mountains, truck farming and raising tobacco. In 1950 he was married and ordained a Baptist minister. In the 1960's he began carving small scenes assembled from roots and knots, and crafting birds and animals from gourds.
